A new study has found that depression and anxiety in psychiatric pharmacists is related to a lower level of mental health services provided to patients, researchers said.

Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, said the study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, was the first to look at psychiatric pharmacistry at its most basic level.

The researchers found that the number of psychiatrists who are psychiatrists and that psychiatrists in general are more likely to provide psychiatric services than pharmacists.

They found that psychiatrists were also more likely than pharmacist staff to be white, male, married and in good health.

“In other words, the more psychiatrists there are in the psychiatric field, the less likely a psychiatrist is to provide mental health care,” lead author Daniel Karp said in a statement.

Psychiatric pharmacists were less likely to have psychiatric illnesses, like depression and schizophrenia, than staff who did not have mental health conditions, the researchers said in the statement.

“What is clear from our study is that a shortage of psychiatrists is an important factor contributing to the low levels of mental illness among pharmacists,” said study co-author John Kaptchuk, a psychology professor at the University at Buffalo.

Previous research has found the number one cause of suicide in pharmacists was the lack of support.

“A shortage of mental-health professionals is one of the most important causes of suicide among pharmacist personnel, and there is an urgent need for mental health professionals to be treated as patients,” Kaptchik said.

The study examined data from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication, a nationally representative survey of more than 10,000 adults who had completed a mental health assessment.

In the study population, there were 5,200 psychiatrists, 6,500 pharmacists, 4,400 psychiatrists, 1,400 pharmacists and 1,300 pharmacists who did no work.

Of the 5,000 psychiatrists, 2,700 were white, 1 of 4 were male and 1 of 6 were married.

About 20% of the pharmacists had a history of depression and 12% of pharmacists reported having mental illness, according to the study.

A lack of psychiatric care was linked to higher rates of suicide and substance abuse.

The researchers said pharmacists in general had less mental health support than the rest of the population, which included healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals.

The results were not surprising because pharmacists tend to be older, white and married, and have higher levels of socioeconomic status, the study found.

“In general, there is a lack of psychosocial support in pharmacistry,” Kapchuk said.

“This is a huge gap between pharmacists working in an industry that typically provides more services to patients and their mental health.”
